When compression is enabled in Putty (0.53b), sshd accepts the keys, username, 
password and then exits, leaving in logs:
fatal: buffer_append_space: alloc 10506240 not supported
Turning off compression in Putty allows to login normally.

It used to work at least with 3.1p1
