As my previous posting quoting Richard Silverman points out, these are not the
only reasons for using ssh. 

Another reason (adding to the list by Richard) is to use compression. Very useful
when forwarding X connections over the Internet. Again when done over VPN, the
encryption from ssh is just an unnecessary overhead.
