OK,

the problem was in my pam configuration. I made all password checking
modules sufficient and let the final pam_deny optional. After I changed
it to required everything works as expected.

Sorry about the confusion. I am always a little confused when
configuring pam.

So again, the patch fixed the issue for me and does not open a security
hole for me.
