login reporting (utmp?) problem on Linux

I have recently compiled and installed it on 4 machines, 3 of which are
Slackware7, and one is Slackware-current.

For me, I have the same behavior -- 0xffffff. opensshd seems to have a utmp
problem, but I can't be sure

All of the ttyp*'s are ssh logins:
