No, I had not done that and it was indeed the problem.
Building from the openssh_cvs tree sources worked.
After rebuilding the openssh*2.5.1p1*.i386.rpm packagesthe problem
went away.

PS: I did have to install libtool-1.3.4-3.i386.rpm first so that the
rpm-3.0.5-9.6x generated file /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.<pid> use of
'[ -f configure.in ] && libtoolize --copy --force ;'
command would work on my RH6.2 system.
