authentication has failed

dear sirs

i am trying to install opensshd on my linux slackware 7.1.
i just descompress the openssh tar gziped file and ./configure 
--sysconfdir=/etc/ssh ;make;make install
ok! sshd to put ssh daemon running on memory and i try to connect to 
mysel (ssh -l username 127.0.0.1)
i put my password but it fails! why? i'm doing something wrong??
