OK... well if anyone is interested in the mysteries of this thread
anymore, we seem to have nailed down the problem just a few minutes ago.
The box I was SSHing/SCPing into... had some problem with the RAID array
(not my box so I don't know the details of that). After its admin
noticed some other funky filesystem behaviors, he moved the home dir of
my account to another spot in the filesystem... and immediately it all
started working correctly. :P
Sigh. :)
