right, i'm not maintaining a portable version right now--we're still
working on how to best structure this.  it's easily applied to portable
with patch and an editor :)

it should work on platforms with modern X11 >=6.5.1 or perhaps others.
it is runtime configurable, now thru gatewayports.  some platforms may use
uname for displayname, so if that's different than gethostname, it won't
work right now.
