Sounds like a good solution, except that I'd use the host:port format instead of host at port, because host:port is more universally recognized/used, unless there is some reason that host:port cannot be used for some reason.
I'd prefer that the option default to on (since otherwise I need to instruct everyone connecting to set it on), but I can understand in the name of backward compatibility if you decide to default it to off.
