OpenSSH: Solaris login and utmpx

We're trying to build OpenSSH 3.0.2p1 for Solaris 8 (among others) and are
running into a problem with UseLogin and utmpx.

If we set "UseLogin no" then we can login okay. finger or who won't find
us, even with a TTY allocated altough "who /etc/wtmpx" will find us.

But the real problem is if we set "UseLogin true" which we must do for BSM
support on some of our boxes. Then, when we try to login, we get the
following:
No utmpx entry. You must exec "login" from the lowest level "shell".

I found that message in a patch submitted in March by Matt Eagleson.
However, grepping on his "LOGIN_NEEDS_UTMPX" addition makes it look like the
patch has been incorporated into the codebase.

So, our configure did define LOGIN_NEEDS_UTMPX, so that's not the problem.
I'm wondering about a post from William Knox that includes a patch
submission with the subject: "PATCH: Fixing last/utmpx for Solaris". Is
this patch what we need? Is there any chance that it will be incorporated
into the official codebase soon? Has anyone answered any of the questions
that he asked in his submission? Or is there something at issue here? Is
there anything I can do to provide help debugging?

We're building with the following options:
--prefix=/opt/openssh --enable-largefile --with-pam --enable-tcp_wrappers
--enable-lastlog --enable-utmpx -x-includes=/usr/openwin/include
--x-libraries=/usr/openwin/lib --with-ssl-dir=/opt/openssh
--with-xauth=/usr/openwin/bin/xauth
--with-default-path=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin
--with-pid-dir=/opt/openssh/etc

We have problems with the current ssh client, previous clients, and F-Secure
Win32 (version 5.1).
