-o presumes _a_ backend. Passing arbitrary options to the backend via -o
is more backend-independent than passing SSH specific options via other 
command-line arguments.

I wish people were as vigorous in auditing, patching or testing the CVS 
code as they were at arguing about trivialities such as -1 options in scp.
