It's bash.  Ksh has no problem running ./configure and finding xauth,
and as I mentioned, adding debugging statements clearly show it is
messing up the for loop or the breaking apart of $PATH.

However, I tried one quick minimized test case and it worked fine,
so it's probably not a trivial/obvious thing to debug.

That's the (second :-) approach I was considering.  Your patch looks
fine to me without actually trying it.
