Another libxnet somewhere else in $LIBRARY_PATH? You could try
export LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/ccs/lib:/usr/local/lib
then make distclean && ../configure

FWIW, 3.4p1 compiles fine on my C240 (HP-UX 11.00, gcc-3.1).
