Not just that, there's a problem in the monitor code as well.
Sometimes the monitor is not aware that authentication succeeded -
although it's possible that the auth-chall.c patch hides this bug.

I see your code is nearly identical to mine, except for variable names
and the use of goto.  Great minds think alike :)
