You are not being clear. I ask not for the reason why it came to be this
way -- I ask if there are reasons why it should _stay_ this way. 

Are you saying that it _IS_ intended that SSH_ASKPASS points to an X11
program, and that anyone trying to use it for any other purpose is
abusing the mechanism?

In which case, there is an outstanding feature request for something
more generic than the existing X11-only SSH_ASKPASS. 

Or are you saying something else?
