Ok, ok -- so it's a perfect implementation of an _intention_ which now
turns out to be broken w.r.t. the real world :)

I didn't realise that distinction really mattered. 

The assumption that the ability to fork a separate process to handle
password/passphrase/interaction requests is only required by X11-capable
clients is not valid. Therefore, the requirement for $DISPLAY to be set
is not useful. Bug #69 has a patch attached which fixes this. Can we
apply it?
