"punt!" is what old netcat's print when they get an interrupt.  It's 
nothing to worry about.

To the original problem: unfortunately, the most useful information will 
be in the server-side debugging (sshd -ddd) which doesn't help a lot if 
the machine is remote and you don't have out-of-band access.
