This was already fixed in coreutils 5.3.x (for x>0) as of 2005-04-26.

The URLs: http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/coreutils and
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils have coreutils-5.91.tar.gz of
2005-10-17 as the lastest stable snapshot as of today.

Of course, just because the lastest development versions have been fixed
does not mean that some folks will not be impacted who happen to use
older releases of the GNU coreutils package. So, the patch you provided
is a good one in any case.
