i just compared the patch on bugzilla with the patch i'm using
on AIX, Solaris and Linux since openssh 2.* without problems.

i'm setting DISPLAY to the ip address from
get_local_ipaddr(packet_get_connection_in())
without getting the DNS name for this ip

Simons reason for that patch might not be so common,
but i see some other reasons to set DISPLAY that way.

- the only interface you can be sure it's up of on a
  system is the one thats used to connect (all others might be down)
- standby cluster systems sometimes have the interface with the
  hostname down (thats why i did my patch as explained in another
  mail on that thread)
- our installations are done over a interface in a admin
  network, while the hostname of the systems is on a interface
  in a service network. in some cases, the service interface
  is configured, but down until the installation and
  configuration is finished
