p1 configure error

I did not see this error with 1.2.2:

checking for OpenSSL/SSLeay directory... configure: error: Could not
find working SSLeay / OpenSSL libraries, please install

I tried 

LD=/usr/ccs/bin/ld ./configure --prefix=/space/local
--with-random="/dev/random" --with-ssl-dir=/space/local/lib

with 

rpm -ql openssl|grep /space/local/lib
/space/local/lib/libRSAglue.a
/space/local/lib/libcrypto.a
/space/local/lib/libssl.a

on a solaris 2.6 box.
