Channel Handling Patch

Indeed I did. I'll make that change tomorrow.

Also, I do want to point out that this patch could have been done in 
different ways. Essentially, all its doing is replacing one type of loop 
with another - which is all I wanted to address at this point. More 
generally, I don't look at this as a production level patch but more of 
an idea for people to consider. If people think its worthwhile I'll be 
spending some more time on it.
