This message is the exit status of the child program run by the
server (usually a user's shell).

sshd appears to behave normally here - it might however be doing
something to upset the child.
Are you attempting to log in or attempting to execute a specific
program?
Can you enable "LogLevel debug" in both the server and the client and
execute "ssh brokenhost 'wait 10'"?
