It's most likely faulty hardware at some point, expecially if you've not 
made any changes.  Flaky RAM, faulty network cards, cables, buggy router

At least some revisions of IRIX appear to have a memory-trashing bug 
somewhere inside the getaddrinfo() family of functions.  That IRIX box 
wasn't patched recently, was it?
