An update on this issue:

I've been running the fix, as sent in this message, on my production
server for the past few weeks:

and I can confirm now that it has indeed fixed the problem.
The "timed out while waiting to read" message has been logged on
my system and the problem was handled correctly.

Thanks very much for the fix! I hope it can make it into the next
release of OpenSSH.
