Snapshots: run autoconf before creating tarballs?

Would it be possible to run autoconf (or make -f Makefile distprep)
before creating the snapshot tarballs? It would make it easier for
people to use (mainly, they wouldn't have to get/install/run autoconf
and GNU m4).
